Smart EV: How it Defines Made-in-China 2025

  Chairman’s Opening Remarks

  Lei Xing, Chief Editor, CBU/CAR

  May 24, 2016

Ladies & gentlemen, distinguished speakers, sponsors, guests and friends from the media, good morning!

Welcome to CBU’s 21st annual international conference on doing automotive business in China, with the theme of Smart EV: How It Defines Made-in-China 2025.

Time really flies! It’s hard to believe that we have already organized two decades of annual international conferences on doing automotive business in China! We are now onto the third decade!

My name is Lei and I am the chief editor of CBU and China Automotive Review, and I will be chairing the conference over the next one and a half days. I see many familiar faces in theaudience and some new ones. Thank you all again for coming.

Why have we decided on the theme of Smart EV: How it Defines Made-in-China 2025?

Well, the year 2016 is significant for the Chinese auto industry in many ways.

The market is entering the so-called “new normal” – a prolonged period of low single digit, zero and maybe even negative growth as far as sales volume is concerned. But despite this and rising capacity glut, which reached 31.22 million industry-wide with an additional 6 million being constructed by the end of 2015, the industry is witnessing the emergence of a new wave of “manufacturing movement,” from both within and outside the industry, and some of those movers and shakers are here to present about their plans.

The year 2016 also marks the start of China’s 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020) and Made-in-China 2025 strategies, which have set specific targets on China’s transportation and infrastructure development and the commercialization of new energy vehicles and autonomous driving and vehicle connectivity. For example, Made-in-China 2025 has a goal to have 80 percent of the vehicles equipped with telecommunication and short-range communication and a market share of 10-20% for highly autonomous vehicles by the year 2025.

While we may see sales volume “normalizing,” nothing will be normal about the path that China will be embarking over the next 10 years toward Made-in-China 2025 as cars become more electrified and smarter.

Some see that the sun maybe setting in China’s auto industry, but I hold a different view. I believe the Chinese auto industry is right in the middle of a golden age and is going through its most exciting times ever. We are seeing the emergence of internet players but don’t forget we are also seeing the emergence of strong Chinese brands, which will be competing with foreign players to deliver vehicles that are autonomous, connected, electrified, smart and shared.

Over the next one and a half days, we will have industry executives and consultants discuss and debate how the smart EV can define Made-in-China 2025. We will be talking about the future prospects of the market especially of new energy vehicles, we will talk about the new manufacturing movement especially from internet players and whether they are really for dough or for show. We will be talking about how suppliers can play a role on the path toward Made-in-China 2025, and we will talk about whether China can really lead the world in crucial technologies such as telematics and autonomous driving. We will hear from executives of traditional OEMs and see what strategies and tactics they will adopt to confront the requirements of Made-in-China 2025, and last but not least we will hear from industry consultants on the evolution of the industry chain over the next decade.

We have an exciting program ahead of us to discuss an exciting industry in one of its most exciting times.
